HOW TO IDENTIFY STORM DAMAGE

Owning a home in New England weather can be stressful. From Nor'easters to hurricanes New England homes are battered with hail, wind, snow and even trees/branches. A roof is the first line of defense your home has when weather strikes. Just like a helmet when biking a roof protects the things you love from water and the impacts of mother nature. Making sure your roof is healthy and intact is a great way to ensure that your home is protected from whatever comes your way. While it is always safer to let a professional inspect and assess your roof there are ways you can evaluate whether you have an issue developing.

We know climbing up on a ladder can be scary and we are here to provide a few ways you can identify an issue without having to leave the ground. First we must learn to identify what storm damage looks like. While it may be easy to spot a tree laying on your roof there are other forms of storm damage that are less visible and can cause significant leaking and issues as well. The two most common causes for damage to your roof are HAIL and WIND, and both can be easily spotted by a trained eye.

IDENTIFYING WIND DAMAGE

Those cozy nights spent inside listening to the wind howling could be causing more damage to your roof than you realize. After a wind event shingles from your home; both 3-tab and architectural, can be torn, bent and even ripped off your home leaving you exposed to future water damage and leaks. To identify some wind damage yourself we recommend going into your yard on a bright sunny day when your roof is dry and clear of all snow or moisture. Take a walk back from your home until your roof is fully visible and begin to scan the slope for any missing shingles. A missing shingle will look like a small dark patch where a shingle once laid.   ( See the photo below to identify what it could look like on your home ) Once the damage is identified you reach out to Connecticut Roofing Solutions to send a technician out to look into the issue further and help you assess the best next steps.

IDENTIFYING HAIL DAMAGE

Hail is the most common cause of damage to asphalt shingles nationally and if persistent can cause serious water permeation and roof leaking. While it is not as easy to identify hail damage from the ground there are some things you can look out for. Similar to wind damage the first step is getting outside on a clear and dry day and getting your eyes on your roof slopes. Hail will come down and cause small impacts in your asphalt shingles leaving penetrations that can reach down to the matting and allow water to travel past your protective barriers into your home. Using binoculars or any tools allowing you zoom will increase your chances of seeing the impacts. ( See the photo below to identify what hail damage may look like on your home ).
